The most interesting fact about the American Wirehair mutation is that it has not been reported in any other country except the United States. The coat of an American Wirehair is what distinguishes it from other breeds of cat. The same as there is a wide variety of texture in Persians or Exotics, there is considerable variation among the Wirehairs.
At birth of a new litter, about half of the kittens will be wirehaired. The whiskers will pop out wiring at first. The best scenario is that the entire litter will have a wired coat at birth. Both parents need to be have a hard coat in order to produce the best wiring.

The American Wirehair cats require very little grooming. They are built sturdy of moderate size, round heads, high cheekbones and a pronounced muzzle. Wirehairs come in a full spectrum of cat coat colors. Himalayan, chocolate and lilac are not accepted for competition. The Wirehair coat trait is dominant. Any breeding between a Wirehair and another cat can produce wired kittens. I think a white with blue eyes would be stunning! They can have golden eyes or amber eye color.
The American Wirehair cats have been described as content to play or fall asleep in their owner's laps. They are cute and humorous, gentle and quiet, but can also be active and playful. They have quiet voices and they generally prefer to stay indoors.
