The Chartreux Cat's History is Steeped in Legends

According to recent research cat fanciers believe the Chartreux cat originated in ancient Persia. Their arrival in Persia came through French monasteries with knights returning from Crusades.

One legend that exists today tells the story of how the Chartreux lived with and were named for the Carthusian monks of France and maybe even shared some of their famous Chartreuse liqueur.

Presence of this breed cat was noted in documents as early as the 16th century as it was acknowledged then for its unique wooly coat texture and color. 

The Chartreux cats have a robust body, broad shoulders and deep chest complemented by medium short, finely boned legs. They had a reputation for being a pro at catching mice in French literature.

It's blue fur is medium in length and wooly having a dense undercoat giving it resistance to the elements and a feeling of sheep's wool.

These cats are known in the cat world for their "smile." Their rounded heads with softly contoured forehead tapers to a narrowed muzzle which gives them a look of smiling, however, the Chartreux's eyes are one of its most enduring features. The eyes are rounded with outer corners curving slightly upward. Color ranges from gold to copper. Copper eyes are most preferred by breeders. The ears should be medium in height and width set high and erect on the head.

Fans of the Chartreux cats say they become easily attached to one family and frequently follow them from place to place like little puppy dogs. They can be taught to fetch a ball and most will respond to its name. They are a quiet breed of cat, chirping rather than meowing and very intelligent.
