The Persian Cats are Elegant and Regal
A Persian’s head is round, massive, and well set on a short thick neck. The ears are small and set far apart. The nose is short and snub with a break. Some experts believe the delicate, silky texture of the Persian coat is attributed to a Persian-Angora cross.
The coat of an Angora white Persian is usually soft and silky and requires an extensive, yet not difficult, care routine.
This cat breed is surely the most elegant of all cats. Its distinctive characteristics include:

Grooming a Persian Cat Tips
Some type of grooming is essential for the Persian cat. Obviously, a show cat will need more grooming than a pet. If you love the look of a show cat, but do not show, you can still groom to that perfect show look. The Persian Cats require a steady routine of extensive grooming.
It is a good idea to have all your grooming supplies in place before you get your Persian kitten. What you will need:
• A gentle slicker brush
• Stain remover
• Shaving cream (used for silvers and goldens)
• Q-tips
• Sharp blade or bikini razor (for silvers and goldens)
• Hemostats or tweezers
• 5” straight scissors, blunt nose scissors or small curved scissors
• Unscented mineral oil (if you are concerned soap will get in kitten’s eyes)
• Small, soft toothbrush
• Life's Abundance Revitalizing Shampoo
• Small, soft cloth or baby wash cloth
• Towels

First thing to remember when grooming a cat is to stay relaxed. If the Persian cat senses you are nervous, he or she will become nervous as well. Set up a routine and follow the same steps each time. You will be less likely to forget completing a specific task and your cat will learn what is coming next, which may help alleviate nervousness. It is best to groom your Persian cat as quickly and efficiently as possible.
If you show your Persian cat, bathing and a full program of grooming is generally on a weekly basis as well as always before the show. The weekly maintenance bath is fine for a cat not in shows. However, to enjoy the full beauty of a Persian often requires doing the little extras as well. To avoid mats, regular daily brushing is recommended.
A kitten needs to be use to a bath by 8 to 10 weeks of age. The first sessions should be short. As time goes on, gradually advance to more grooming procedures.
Before the bath:
• Lay the Persian cat on his or her stomach on the grooming table
• Apply stain remover to areas where needed

• Avoid shaving up to high on the nose
• Use hemostats or tweezers to gently remove black whiskers from the face, pull one whisker at a time and try to grasp close to the roots without getting other hairs
• Stand from behind and to the side of the Persian cat
• Hold the cat’s head with one hand, and carefully trim around the eyes, using 5” straight scissors, remove longer strands of hairs and eyelashes (the result should: Wider and more open appearing eyes
• Caution: Do not trim around the eyes while standing in front of the cat
• Blunt nose scissors or small curved scissors may be substituted for the 5” straight scissors for cutting around the eyes

• If he or she senses you are apprehension, he or she will most likely become the same
• If the cat is extra annoyed, put down a wet towel for the cat to stand on and grasp his nails
• For first few baths, make them short
• As cat becomes accustomed to the bath, decrease the amount of restraint, and increase time bathing
• Once water is correct temperature, begin wetting the cat with the hose in one hand and working the water in with the other while rubbing the cat gently and talking
• When the coat is completely wet, turn off the water
• Apply Life's Abundance Revitalizing Shampoo
• A small sponge works well to work a good lather
• Do not scrub, with the exception of foot pads and toe nails that absorb odor
• Bring the shampoo to a good lather and then rinse
• Always start at the head and work back whether bathing or rinsing
• While rinsing, use one hand to work the shampoo in and out until the coat is completely rinsed
• Apply shampoos again and repeat the same procedure for a better lathering process
• Rinse again and lather one last time
• Rinse, rinse, rinse (this is the actual bathing of the coat, the rinsing of the suds through the coat)
• After the third and final bathing and lathering, use a conditioner to cut down on the static electricity created by dryers
• Rinse, rinse and rinse the conditioner out of the coat
• When the coat is rinsed completely, it will have a squeaky feel
• Rub off excess water from the coat in the direction of the growth of the hair
• Apply a towel to the cat in the tub and pat the coat
• Do not rub
• Wash your hands
The next grooming procedure should be trimming the ears and nails.
• Pick your Persian cat up in a towel (this has a calming effect)
• Take he or she to the grooming table
• Wipe the eyes, face and ears with the damp towel or baby wash cloth
• While cat is wrapped in towel, check around the eyes for straggly hairs missed and clip with the scissors
• Separate ear tuffs from the ears and gently trim around top of the ears, remove excess feathering, making them round
• Be careful when trimming hair from the ears, better to do this when the hair is wet so you can easily see the ear leather
• If you accidentally slice the ear leather, it will not regenerate and it will bleed quite heavily
• The best time to clip the nails is while the cat is wet
• Do not clip down to the pink quick, there will be bleeding if you do so
• Many cats object to having their paws held and pinched enough to extend the claw, so be careful and gentle to avoid getting scratched
It is recommended you use a dryer especially for drying animals, as human dryers, sometimes get too hot. If you do use a human dryer, use the low setting.
• Place your cat on the grooming table and begin fluff drying the coat
• Use a gentle slicker brush and continuously brush the coat in all directions until every hair is completely dry
• If your cat turns around and walks around, work with the cat as he or she moves
• Be patient
• Once the coat is completely dried and fluffed out, hand scissor the face with thinning shears or hand pluck to give a rounded, natural looking appearance
• The face and head should look neat, not untidy, or over-plucked
• Longer ear tuffs creates a longer length in the face, of which you do not want
• If you find heavy coat growth around the rectal area, clip some of this away
• Remember that using a slicker brush will give you more volume and less static electricity

Amazing Facts About Cats
Cats are not much at all like dogs, however, they are the most popular pet companion in North America. Cats can be enigmatic, independent, aloof, and entertaining. They can be easier to take care of than dogs, unless you have a long haired cat like I had, the Silver Persian cats, that requires extensive grooming. Cats are definitely quieter and so make better apartment living companions in some instances.

- Cats can use their mouth to smell. The flehmen response is when a cat takes a big sniff, then pulls their mouth back in what looks like a sneer. This is also an important means of communication in the feline world. Cats gain extra information from other cats urine smells, which makes us humans make a horrible face.
- Cats are well adapted to high-heat environments. Cats are not suppose to pant like a dog does in high-heat environments. Humans sweat. Cats neither sweat like humans or pant like dogs. Because cats evolved from desert-dwelling creatures, they have very efficient kidneys. They can survive longer than other mammals with less water without becoming dehydrated.
- Cats do have night vision. Cats are unusual in that they have both predator and prey adaptations. One of the cat's most unique features is their slit pupil that allows the pupil to contract more quickly than the circular pupils of dogs and humans. This unique feature allows the cat to adjust more quickly to changes in ambient light. They also have the largest eyes of any mammal relative to their size. More rods in the back of their retina and tapetum lucidum which is a reflective layer of tissue gives their eyes the "eerie green glow" in the dark.
- During the Middle Ages, the Black Death in Europe killed an estimated 25% of people. The disease was carried throughout the country on rodents. Cats were condemned at the time during the Spanish Inquisition as being "evil" and killed by the thousands. The cat depopulation allowed the rodent population to explode which extended the effects of the plague. Cats could have changed the course of history during that time had they been allowed to live and catch the rodents that carried the fleas with the bubonic plague to humans.
- Hissing is a unique feline vocalization. Not all cats hiss. Those that do are very upset or frightened. This is the cat's way of warning someone that whatever they are doing, it is making the cat very unhappy. A hiss is a mild warning. If you don't stop whatever it is, the cat's next defense may be claws or teeth.
I will never forget the time I was raising Persian kittens. They are very difficult to groom. I was trying to groom one of them and she was extremely unhappy, hissing loudly at me, not trying to attack, but just warning me, an attack might be next if I did not stop trying to groom her.
My Taz was the father of this girl. I gave up, sat down in a chair only to see Taz quietly walk in front of me, looked me straight in the eye and opened his mouth real wide showing me his sharp teeth. He actually was saying to me. You have been warned by a hiss, now back off, because we got teeth that could tear you apart! Taz could actually say the word "play." He was determined to keep me playing constantly with HIM. These cats are beautiful, but they were much smarter than I was and were constantly showing me just how smart they really were. I never could get to know them well enough to continue raising them. I had to give up.

I still find cats to be interesting and amazing creatures. Perhaps another breed of cat, a short haired cat who did not think so highly of themselves, and did not require such intensive grooming that required complete cooperation of the cat.
The Silver Persians think they are royalty and they demand to be treated as if they are kings and queens living in a palace all their own in which in my case, I WAS THEIR HOUSEKEEPER, and nothing more. I did not make a good maid to the silver Persian cats!

The American Wirehair is Uniquely American
The American Wirehair cats began as a spontaneous mutation in a litter of upstate New York farm cats in 1966. A spontaneous mutation is uncommon, although not rare.

The most interesting fact about the American Wirehair mutation is that it has not been reported in any other country except the United States. The coat of an American Wirehair is what distinguishes it from other breeds of cat. The same as there is a wide variety of texture in Persians or Exotics, there is considerable variation among the Wirehairs.
At birth of a new litter, about half of the kittens will be wirehaired. The whiskers will pop out wiring at first. The best scenario is that the entire litter will have a wired coat at birth. Both parents need to be have a hard coat in order to produce the best wiring.

The American Wirehair cats require very little grooming. They are built sturdy of moderate size, round heads, high cheekbones and a pronounced muzzle. Wirehairs come in a full spectrum of cat coat colors. Himalayan, chocolate and lilac are not accepted for competition. The Wirehair coat trait is dominant. Any breeding between a Wirehair and another cat can produce wired kittens. I think a white with blue eyes would be stunning! They can have golden eyes or amber eye color.

The American Shorthair Cat is a Gentle Companion
The American Shorthair Cat is a gentle companion and great playmate for your children. He becomes a full-fledge member of the family in no time at all.
