The Abyssinian is one of the oldest known breeds of cats. They look like the paintings and sculptures of ancient Egyptian cats. If you have seen these sculptures and paintings you will notice the cat portrayed are elegant looking with a muscular body and a beautiful arched neck with large ears and almond shaped eyes. The similarities between these paintings and sculptures are unique to our today Abyssinian cat which makes us believe they are sculptures and paintings of this cat breed.

The Abyssinian today also resembles the jungle look of the African wildcat ancestor of all domestic cats.
It has been said the Abyssinian cats were originally from Ethiopia. The first Abyssinian's exhibited in shows were seen in England.
More recent studies indicate the Abyssinian cats originated on the coast of the Indian Ocean and parts of Southeast Asia. As a breed, the Abyssinian was most likely refined in England. They were likely introduced to England and other countries as result of colonists and merchants stopping in Calcutta which was the major port for the Indian Ocean. They first came to North America from England in the early 1900s. The 1930s introduced several top quality Abyssinian cats from Britain to form the foundation of today's American breeding programs.(source CFA)
Zula, the so-called "first Abyssinian" (pictured below)
This is a very intelligent, people-oriented cat. He or she is not a lap cat, but a cat who likes to be with people, and a cat that wants to know what you are doing (interested in people) and oddly enough, a cat that wants to help you. They are very loyal companions. They have a unique understanding of their human beings that possibly not many others even humans will ever have. Be aware though this cat may end up training you to do just what they want you to do.
Professional breeders of the Abyssinian cat usually make their kittens available between 12 and 16 weeks of age.
