Matching Homeless Cats to Single, Elderly People Living Alone

Research and special projects are going on now examining the benefits of pet ownership on mental and emotional health in older adults living alone. Research participants are being matched with homeless foster cats and will be assessed throughout the study to determine whether having a pet in the home leads to changes in quality of life. Areas that will be assessed include:

  • loneliness
  • emotional well-being
  • purpose of life
  • attachment
  • comfort

Researchers hope to propose a unique solution to hep older adults living alone establish new social bonds with the homeless foster cats. They hope to find improvements in mental and behavioral health such as a reduction in loneliness and depression and that an attachment to the cat will increase the human's desire to actual adoption.

Researchers hope to sort of kill two birds with one stone: Help for the elderly and help for homeless cats. The majority of people living alone are 75 years or older. Many of these people spend their days inside the home. It is hard for these who are single to maintain social connections, plan meals or engage in other health promoting activities. Once they have a pet in the home they have a reason to get up and do things and a sense of purpose. The pet becomes something to care for who depends upon them. Researchers also believe older adults who live alone are ideal foster parents because they can give the cat love and a lot more individualized attention that people who work and are away from the house 9 or more hours per day.

If the research proves successful it creates a huge win for both elderly people and homeless cats!

Common Human Medications Toxic to Cats

The top five medications your cat is toxic to are:
  1. Ibuprofen
  2. Acetaminophen
  3. Stimulants
  4. Vitamin D
Most people are aware chocolate and grapes can be toxic for cats.

Ibuprofen is the active ingredient in over the counter medicines like Advil, and Motrin. Cats are particularly sensitive to the effects of ibuprofen. The most common sign your cat has eaten ibuprofen is vomiting or gastrointestinal ulcers. Ibuprofen ingestion by cats can also lead to kidney damage. Other NSAIDS like Aleve can also be a problem.

Acetaminophen is found in Tylenol and other pain killing medications. Cats are particularly sensitive to the effects of Acetaminophen. One pill is enough to kill a cat. They can also experience liver damage as result of eating this medication. Signs often start with decreased appetite leading to yellow skin or jaundice, swollen paws or difficulty breathing. Acetaminophen is also a common ingredient in combination products like cough and flu remedies.

Stimulants such as Adderall and Ritalin can be toxic to cats. Signs of ingestion may include dilated pupils, seizures, shaking or hyperactivity.

Antidepressants such as Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft and Effexor and cat be toxic to cats. Symptoms are depression, hyperexcitability, seizures and vomiting.

Vitamin D can be toxic to cats. It might appear on the labels of rat poison such as d-Con as cholecalciferol.

Take the time to ensure these items in your house are safely secured away from your pet cats. If you suspect your cat has eaten any of them call the poison control center immediately or your vet.

Should You Supplement Your Cat With Fish Oil?

Supplements for cats continue to gain popularity. Research on this topic is being done daily. People seem to be especially curious about supplementing with Fish Oil. There is research suggesting benefits of giving your cat Fish Oil supplements. They include:

  • help to ease joint pain
  • help for heart disease
  • help for kidney disease
Because joint disease is associated with inflammation and reduced mobility there is evidence this disease can be helped with omega-3 fatty acids. If your pet is overweight, the first step should be to reduce weight which also alleviates joint pain.

Fish Oil for cats with heart disease can help reduce the inflammation associated with heart failure and may help reduce muscle loss that is associated with heart failure. In addition, some research shows the anti-inflammatory effects of Fish Oil Supplements helps to reduce abnormal heart rhythms.

Some pets, including cats, also benefit from Fish Oil supplements in cases of kidney disease such as reducing protein in their urine. Currently there is less research available about supplementing cats with kidney disease, however, there are some reports suggesting cats with kidney disease may live longer when supplemented with Fish Oil supplements.

It is also a good idea to consult with your vet before giving your cat any kind of supplement as there are different recommended doses depending upon the disease you are trying to help.

Life's Abundance distributes a Fish Oil Supplement for cats and dogs. Click the photo below for more information.

 Fish Oil

Not All Pet Fish Oils are Created Equal

Regular supplementation of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) from fish oil can help support your companion animal’s healthy skin, coat, heart, brain eyes and joints. However, numerous supplements on the shelves today do not contain the optimal concentration of fish oil. In addition, many of these supplements are not tested by an independent laboratory to ensure purity and safety.

Ultra-Pure Fish Oil is Better

Our fish oils contain at least 30% EPA and DHA, an ideal concentration for the overall health of your dog or cat. The oil is in a triglyceride form, which is highly bioavailable and without added flavors so it has a natural taste that dogs and cats love.

Our liquid fish oil supplements are effortless to feed compared to gel capsules, which can be difficult to swallow and messy when rejected. The 2-oz. bottle has an easy-to-measure dropper and the 8-oz. bottle has an easy-to-use cup. (A triglyceride fish oil will not have any effect on the plastic dropper or measuring cup.)

Ultra-Pure Fish Oil offers outstanding value. For example, it cost only $.18 a day for a ten-pound cat and only $.37 a day for a 40-lb. dog on Autoship.

Dependable Quality

In its unpurified form, fish oil contains many environmental contaminants, some of which can be harmful to your pet’s health. To purify the oil takes many steps, each one adding to the cost of manufacturing. It is important to buy your fish oil from a company that not only says it purifies the oil, but one that is willing to share the test results from every batch made. It’s the surest way to know what you’re feeding is perfectly safe.

Ultra-Pure Fish Oil for pets are made in a human pharmaceutical facility … the same place as our Fish Oil for people. They are highly concentrated and ultra-pure. Like our Fish Oil for people, each bottle receives a nitrogen flush to remove oxygen from the bottle before it is sealed for ultra freshness. Plus, Ultra-Pure Fish Oils meet or exceed the highest standards in the industry for quality assurance. In fact, each batch of Ultra-Pure Fish Oil for pets is tested by an independent third-party organization (IFOS) and the results are posted right here so you can see the quality, concentration and purity that Ultra-Pure Fish Oil supplements offer.

Tips for Giving Cats Medication

Most cats will need to take medication at some point in their life with you. What if you end up having to give multiple medications long term to treat a chronic medical condition? How can you manage it all? You might be lucky and have a cat that will willingly accept whatever medication you need to give. On the flip side are the cats who will need to be "sort of tricked" into medication taking. Cats are so smart! You have to outsmart the cat sometimes.

Most cat owners will tell you they use food to give medications to their cats. It can make things a lot easier, however, what kind of food are you using? Are you using tasty foods such as cheese, peanut butter, cream cheese, deli or lunch meats, chicken or bread to name a few of the choices cat pet owners use. All of these foods are very high in sodium and can be harmful.
For cats with kidney disease, dietary restriction of nutrients like phosphorus, sodium and even protein have important benefits, yet many of these foods used to give medications are high in these nutrients. Other disease such as liver disease, certain bladder stones, or gastrointestinal disease also benefit from dietary changes. This brings us to the conclusion that even when cat pet owners are conscientious about their cat food and treats, you can counteract all the good nutrition you are giving your cat by giving medications in foods that do not match ultimate nutrition goals. The calories from these extra foods can add up as well.
What you can do:
  1. Ask your vet or veterinary technician to teach you how to administer medication directly into your pet's mouth without using foods.
  2. Reward your pet cat after getting the medication with something he highly enjoys like a yummy and nutritious treat or something else like extra cuddle time or playing a favorite game, just anything to reward the cat after he or she has done as should be.
  3. Try using a pet pill gun.
  4. If you have to give multiple medications try putting several smaller pills into an empty gelatin capsule so you end up giving one gelatin capsule instead of multiple individual pills.
  5. If you use food use canned pet foods that meet your pet cat's nutritional needs such as Life's Abundance Instinctive Cat Food found in this healthy start pack for cats. Click the image below for more information.
