Cats are not much at all like dogs, however, they are the most popular pet companion in North America. Cats can be enigmatic, independent, aloof, and entertaining. They can be easier to take care of than dogs, unless you have a long haired cat like I had, the Silver Persian cats, that requires extensive grooming. Cats are definitely quieter and so make better apartment living companions in some instances.

- Cats can use their mouth to smell. The flehmen response is when a cat takes a big sniff, then pulls their mouth back in what looks like a sneer. This is also an important means of communication in the feline world. Cats gain extra information from other cats urine smells, which makes us humans make a horrible face.
- Cats are well adapted to high-heat environments. Cats are not suppose to pant like a dog does in high-heat environments. Humans sweat. Cats neither sweat like humans or pant like dogs. Because cats evolved from desert-dwelling creatures, they have very efficient kidneys. They can survive longer than other mammals with less water without becoming dehydrated.
- Cats do have night vision. Cats are unusual in that they have both predator and prey adaptations. One of the cat's most unique features is their slit pupil that allows the pupil to contract more quickly than the circular pupils of dogs and humans. This unique feature allows the cat to adjust more quickly to changes in ambient light. They also have the largest eyes of any mammal relative to their size. More rods in the back of their retina and tapetum lucidum which is a reflective layer of tissue gives their eyes the "eerie green glow" in the dark.
- During the Middle Ages, the Black Death in Europe killed an estimated 25% of people. The disease was carried throughout the country on rodents. Cats were condemned at the time during the Spanish Inquisition as being "evil" and killed by the thousands. The cat depopulation allowed the rodent population to explode which extended the effects of the plague. Cats could have changed the course of history during that time had they been allowed to live and catch the rodents that carried the fleas with the bubonic plague to humans.
- Hissing is a unique feline vocalization. Not all cats hiss. Those that do are very upset or frightened. This is the cat's way of warning someone that whatever they are doing, it is making the cat very unhappy. A hiss is a mild warning. If you don't stop whatever it is, the cat's next defense may be claws or teeth.
I will never forget the time I was raising Persian kittens. They are very difficult to groom. I was trying to groom one of them and she was extremely unhappy, hissing loudly at me, not trying to attack, but just warning me, an attack might be next if I did not stop trying to groom her.
My Taz was the father of this girl. I gave up, sat down in a chair only to see Taz quietly walk in front of me, looked me straight in the eye and opened his mouth real wide showing me his sharp teeth. He actually was saying to me. You have been warned by a hiss, now back off, because we got teeth that could tear you apart! Taz could actually say the word "play." He was determined to keep me playing constantly with HIM. Taz also dominated the entire crew. I bought a beautiful girl I named Diamond. Taz liked her, but he would never allow her to be with me. Diamond could be with Taz and the rest of the crew, but Diamond was never allowed to "love me." I had one named Fairy who came from the same breeder Taz came from. Taz allowed Fairy to love me. He allowed his daughter Butter to love me, but Diamond was totally forbidden to get near me. Taz was extremely jealous of Diamond from the first day I brought her into the group and he decided she would never be anything to me at all. She could be one cats, but she was strictly forbidden to be near me, to love me or have anything at all to do with me! Taz was the absolute boss. Diamond could say "ma-ma, and she called me "ma-ma" very clearly many times. Still yet, she was not allowed near me, not for grooming or anything else.
Taz also seemed to become jealous of a work man I had in the yard one day. He watched the work man with a "stare," from his cabin window. When I entered the cat cabin after the man left, Taz sat in the corner of the house as if posing to me to show me how beautiful he was. I did think Taz was beautiful and Taz knew this. I could almost hear him saying, "so you will trade ME for that man?" Taz was absolutely jealous of the work man. He would walk around me as if showing himself to me, but like he was pouting about something. Taz actually did put up with a lot of grooming, allowed me to bath him and all that I needed to do.

These cats are beautiful, but they were much smarter than I was and were constantly showing me just how smart they really were. I never could get to know them well enough to continue raising them. I had to give up.

I still find cats to be interesting and amazing creatures. Perhaps another breed of cat, a short haired cat who did not think so highly of themselves, and did not require such intensive grooming that required complete cooperation of the cat.
The Silver Persians think they are royalty and they demand to be treated as if they are kings and queens living in a palace all their own in which in my case, I WAS THEIR HOUSEKEEPER, and nothing more. I did not make a good maid to the silver Persian cats!
They did love the Life's Abundance cat food, especially the canned foods. However, no matter what I did for them, they never trusted me fully and were determined to be in control of me instead of me in control of them.
