The most common systemic fungal disease of domestic cats worldwide is cryptococcosis. This fungal disease affects horses, goats, sheep, cattle, ferrets, dolphins, dogs and cats. Cats are five to six times more likely to have the disease than dogs. People can also become infected, however, the infection in cats is not considered a public health hazard as there is no proven spread between animals and people.
Pigeons are the primary carrier. This fact probably accounts for the disease being a worldwide problem. They carry the disease on their beaks, feathers and legs.
In cats, inhalation of Cryptococcus spores is believed to be the source of contracting the disease. When the respiratory system becomes infected, the organism can spread throughout the body via the bloodstream. Most common sites affected by cryptococcal infection in cats are:
- nasal cavity
- skin
- lymph nodes
- brain
- meninges (membranes covering the brain)
- eyes
- skin lesions can occur
Skin lesions usually consist of solitary or multiple nodules on bridge of nose and may or may not become ulcerated. Sometimes the lungs can become involved and mimic the presence of pneumonia. Since the nasal cavity is the most common site of infection, most cats will show symptoms of:
- sneezing
- noisy breathing
- nasal discharge usually thick and yellow, occasionally bloody
- nasal deformity
- you might notice a small poly-like mass in one or both nostrils
