It is best to keep your cat indoors for their safety and overall health. An indoor environment must be arranged to meet their basic feline needs. If this is not the case, a cat may become predispose to feline idiopathic cystitis. Scientific feline research offers several suggestions for reducing stress in cats. Review the following:
- Canned food is recommended for cats with urinary tract problems because of the high water content. Make a quiet spot for your cat to eat and drink as cats prefer quiet, comfortable places to eat and drink. Keep them away from noises that may seem threatening as they eat and drink. Experiment with fountains, dripping water, and different sizes and shapes of bowls. Provide your cat with multiple, separate feeding and drinking stations in different parts of your home. Multiple feeding stations in different spots in the home is especially important for multi-cat households.
- Cats love to observe their world from high places. Provide your cats with safe havens in quiet, elevated and secure spots of your home. The more elevated retreats you can provide is all the better. Give them a variety of cat trees, perches, climbing frames, hammocks, shelves and window seats. All these spaces can become their favorite sleeping spots as well.
- Locate litter boxes in quiet areas away from other animals, loud noises and appliances. The larger the box is all the better. A lot of cats prefer a particular kind of litter. Unscented, fine-grained, clumping litter is recommended for cats with urinary problems. Scoop your litter boxes twice daily. Clean litter boxes once per week. Replace litter boxes with odors. Experts recommend keeping multiple litter boxes in multiple locations. Again, this is more important for households with multiple cats. A good rule to follow is 1+1 (one box for each cat, plus one extra box).
- Cats benefit from positive, predictable, regular social interaction with their humans. This kind of cat-human interaction strengthens the human-animal bond. Make your interactions frequent and of low-intensity both with humans and other animals. Allow the cats to initiate, moderate and end the social interactions. Anxiety and conflict might arise when a cat feels threatened. They may become aggressive, withdraw altogether from you or even become ill if they feel threatened. In multi-cat households conflict can be common if a cat or cats feel loss of control, status and resources such as food, water, nesting places, etc.
- Indoor resources for cats should provide for natural behaviors such as scratching, chewing and playing. Vertical and horizontal scratching objects made from a variety of materials like sisal rope, natural bark or cardboard is highly recommended. Provide them with toys that mimic predatory hunting behaviors of stalking, chasing, pouncing and biting. Such toys an be wands, feathers, ping pong balls in a bathtub. These kind of toys help to satisfy the cat's natural preying behavior. Never punish your cat for engaging in these kind of natural behaviors. source: Tuft's Vet University Catnip Newsletters
